Summary

The Group Director Maintenance & Engineering position will be the lead authority on technical maintenance, reliability engineering, warranty, and maintenance research & development. As such, this role is responsible for driving Uptime & optimal maintenance costs through defined maintenance polices and practices in addition to management of OEM quality. This position will ensure timely and efficient support services are provided to Ryder's field organization and customers.

Essential Functions

  • Drive all Reliability Engineering efforts to facilitate optimal fleet costs and uptime of Ryder’s fleet by focusing on identifying and mitigating all OEM quality issues within the fleet and driving higher yield on all maintenance wear items. Directly supervise the Technical Assistance Center to ensure the team's goals and focus are in alignment with the FMS Field Maintenance Organization. Manages the service and warranty relationships with all OEMs.

  • Directly manage the New and Used Vehicle Warranty Operations and all associated activities. Lead all efforts to optimally recover warranty, and policy on Ryder’s behalf for new vehicles by benchmarking best practices with the OEMs, identifying and driving end-to-end improvements. Effectively administering Ryder’s used vehicle warranties while driving a positive customer experience.

  • Responsible for ensuring excellence in service to all customers across all business units through the design and consistent execution of maintenance initiatives, measurement standards, integration of best practices and performance management:1 - Reduce rework and breakdown frequency2 - Reduce overall operational maintenance costs while improving customer satisfaction3 - Implement basic, advanced maintenance and diagnostic practices to improve vehicle uptime4 - Improve technician efficiency and operational effectiveness5 - Improve the safety and reliability of Ryder's vehicles and shop operations.

  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining all preventive maintenance processes used by the field organization to maintain Ryder's customers' vehicles. Bring visibility to the adherence/compliance with Ryder's maintenance policies and procedures. Responsible for directing and developing all maintenance activities and processes for Ryder's Fleet Management Solutions Division, including developing all maintenance related Standard Operating Procedures and Standard Repair Practices.

  • Direct the development/implementation of maintenance evaluation projects that have the potential of lowering Ryder's operating costs and/or providing a competitive advantage. Work with peers to optimize the total cost of vehicle ownership through optimization of the overall maintenance program and active evaluation of opportunities to improve both cost competitiveness and quality service. Establish and drive the associated Maintenance Initiatives to reduce or avoid overall maintenance costs.

  • Responsible for incorporating the use of leading technology to improve the maintenance program and execution of quality maintenance and repairs, including integration of on-board vehicle technology into the overall maintenance program. Identify all required tools and diagnostic technology needed to effectively and efficiently diagnose Ryder’s diverse fleet of internal combustion engines and advanced technology vehicles.

  • Direct Ryder’s Maintenance R&D efforts to assure a leadership position in the maintenance of Advanced Vehicle Technology. Ensure consistent maintenance practices that optimize the life of the vehicles and technology while mitigating costs.

  • Responsible for providing technical maintenance leadership and expertise to Ryder’s FMS Leadership Staff, Regional Operators, Sales leaders and other functional leaders

Additional Responsibilities

  • Identify and promote (internally) maintenance opportunities that could give Ryder a competitive advantage

  • Support legal counsel (internal/external) by providing technical and/or expert testimony in any legal matters regarding maintenance issues when requested

  • Represent Ryder in various industry organizations and develop contacts for the purpose of promoting Ryder's corporate objectives and goals

  • Enhance Ryder's position as the premier company for existing and future technicians to work

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required Business, Operations Management or related field

  • Master's degree preferred MBA, Operations Management or related field

  • Ten (10) years or more 15+ years experience in diversified management, maintenance & operational positions required

  • Ten (10) years or more Subject matter expertise in all phases of heavy vehicle/diesel maintenance and different vehicle types required

  • Ten (10) years or more Experience with advanced shop/maintenance/fleet management systems and on-board vehicle technology systems preferred

  • Ten (10) years or more Previous relevant experience with the management and implementation of change management projects required

  • Certified Six Sigma Green Belt, preferred

  • Certified Six Sigma Black Belt, preferre
