The Accountant Fuel Tax Compliance is responsible for supporting the Compliance team providing financial, analytical and technical acumen enabling accurate and timely filing and reporting of fuel and mileage taxes. The position will leverage tools including Workday Finance, Appian, and Microsoft Access and Excel. The position functions within the team that is responsible for tax filings relating to vehicle fuel and mileage compliance, and continuously looks for improvements in operational process and design. The position plays an active role in implementing initiatives and leveraging automation to optimize efficiency and minimize unnecessary compliance tax expense and exposure to Ryder and our customers. The position provides excellent customer service to all external and internal customers while maintaining compliance in all areas of fuel and mileage tax reporting and filings.

*HYBRID WORK FROM HOME: local to Miami/Broward area, within driving distance to our Miami HQ. *


Ledger Reconciliations & Fuel Tax Returns:

  • Prepare general ledger account reconciliations for IFTA permits, IFT mileage, fuel use tax, third structure mile taxes and other compliance and tax services ledgers

  • Construct and submit supporting compliance ledger account journal entries

  • Prepare and process the monthly mile and fuel adjustments assisting and supporting Sr Accountant tasks

  • Research, analyze, and draft responses and findings to external audit requests

  • Analyze and review IFTA and mileage tax returns for Tax Services Group for accuracy and completeness

  • Develop and provide weekly/monthly report analysis to finance, operations and sales teams, including support teams at headquarters and shared services

  • Provide direct support and assistance to both the Sr. Accountant and Compliance managers, including their departmental tasks and day to day functions

Financial Technical Support & Oversight:

  • Perform all physical database modifications and updates required to support changing and emerging business needs

  • Develop, maintain and update databases and tables for Masterfile maintenance, tax tables, self-reporting IFTA customers, NY/OR customer list, IFTA customer renewals, Guardian file, RIL files and other compliance related data.

  • Assimilate and provide reporting and process coordination of fuel and mileage tax activities between Ryder headquarters and Ryder field operations and sales

  • Ensure team adheres to financial integrity of business location performance and results

  • Ensure the team maintains and adheres to the monthly and quarterly financial and operational controls within Ryders GAAP

  • Ensure protocols are followed and develop desk tasks to manage and eliminate cost and process waste


  • Develop training documentation and user manuals as needed

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting


  • Four (4) years or more experience working with tax return review and analysis

  • Four (4) years or more experience in accounting forecasts

  • Three (3) years or more experience negotiations with auditors

  • Three (3) years or more experience with tax systems


  • Strong analytical and technical research skills

  • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills

  • Reliable self-starter with strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Excellent accounting skills

  • Proven ability in maintaining tax systems


  • Solid understanding of Excel/Word & Access; advanced level.

  • High level of accounting skills; advanced level.
