Ryder System Claims Manager, Liability in CENTENNIAL, Colorado

Position Description

This position manages claims within Ryder's self-insured, self-administered liability program. Oversees claim-handling processes performed by a professional staff. Assists Director in the identification of exposures, recommends solutions, promotes loss prevention and monitors compliance with procedures and supervises documented safety / risk management programs.

Requirements

  • Seven or more years experience in Casualty claims, including supervision and handling of large, complex cases

  • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience required

  • Must possess a comprehensive understanding of all relevant laws and regulations governing Property and Casualty claims in the US, Canada & Puerto Rico

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrated ability to manage a staff of at least 7 people

  • Strong commitment to the principles of customer focus

  • Knowledge of supervisory techniques and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to effectively communicate precise directions to staff members

  • Superior negotiation skills and ability to deal effectively with plaintiff attorneys and direct staff on those skills as well

  • Comprehensive understanding of all relevant laws and regulations as well as related medical and legal terminology

Responsibilities

  • Monitors changes and proposed changes in laws that could impact Ryder's Liability program and recommends to Director new processes that will ensure compliance and mitigates exposure

  • Interacts with field and operations management, legal counsel, safety managers, customers, insurance carriers, and third party claimants

  • Participates in large claim review calls and updates field operations personnel on claim status

  • Ensures claims are being handled appropriately according to the applicable jurisdiction

  • Prepares files and coordinates audits for primary and excess insurance carriers, re-insurers, and financial auditors

  • Participates with Director in the selection and management of outside vendors for investigation, cost containment, audit functions, expert witnesses, and Litigation Management

  • Works directly with various State Departments of Insurance on inquiries and complaints

  • Monitors staff's technical work and develops and implements action plans if deficiencies are noted

  • Reviews reserves and trends on individual cases to ensure the reserves represent the probable ultimate payout based on documented file developments

  • Monitors staff's workflow to ensure accurate processing of claims and timely establishment of reserves

  • Manages the efforts of Ryder's national liability staff to ensure both technical expertise and a high level of customer service are attained

  • Responsible for coaching, education and performance appraisals of assigned staff
